Have you heard the Rumor of the ATM Panic Code?

If you use social media like Facebook, or Twitter, you have probably heard the that by entering your ATM Pin number backwards it will send out an ATM Panic Code or distress signal, contact the authorities, or even lock your account if you are being held up at the ATM. For example if your Pin is 1234, you would enter 4321 and the ATM Panic Code would notify the police that you are being held up.

Although the ATM Panic Code may sound like it is a plausible- it is simply false

For starters- you choose your own PIN number. It can be all the same numbers, like 1111. It can be the same backwards as forwards, like 1221 or 3443. Another reason why the ATM Panic Code is a myth is what if your number is complicated. Like 7286. If you are being held up at an ATM, what are the chances that under pressure you will think fast enough to put this in backwards. Probably slim to none.  An even more simple explanation of why the ATM Panic Code is a myth is ATMs are not linked to the authorities. Although there are ATM Alarms, and ATM GPS tracking- these devices are designed to notify the police if the ATM is being stolen. Just like a home alarm system.  ATMs transactions transmit via credit card processing networks. These networks are in turn linked to banks, and accounts. Nothing else. The fact is, by entering your PIN backwards you will simply get the response….incorrect PIN. Don’t believe us? TRY IT YOURSELF AT ANY ATM.
