Reverse ATM PIN Panic Code Myth

If you use facebook, twitter, buzzfeed, or any other social media outlets, you have probably heard the myth that by entering your ATM Pin backwards or in reverse it will send out a distress signal, contact the authorities, or even lock your account.While this may sound like a good idea- it is simply not true.

For starters- you choose your own PIN number. It can be all the same numbers, like 1111. It can be the same backwards as forwards, like 1221 or 3443. Another reason is what if your number is complicated. Like 7682. If you are being held up at an ATM, what are the chances that you will think fast enough to put this in backwards. Probably slim to none.  An even more simple explanation is- ATMs are not linked to the authorities. ATMs are connected to card processing networks. These networks are in turn linked to banks, and accounts. Nothing else. The fact is, by entering your PIN backwards you will get the response….incorrect PIN.

Should you get held up at an ATM here are some safety tips:

1. Always be aware of your surroundings. If it looks suspicious, don’t use it.
2. Never count your cash in public.
3. Avoid using poorly lit ATMs on the street at night
4. If you are approached by a robber- comply with his or her demands.
